The Saxon Arms

The Saxon Arms is a beautiful thatched flint-stone pub, set in the pretty, rural village of Stratton, in West Dorset.
We are much-loved in the community for our quality, home-cooked food offering, superbly kept cask ales and an extensive wine list.

WELCOME

Welcome

Run by landlord and landlady Rod and Janette Lamont – who have over 40 years experience in the trade – and supported by a loyal and well-trained staff team, The Saxon Arms has long established itself as the hub of the local community and one of the best dining pubs in the county.

We source from local producers which represent the best of British food. We serve a great variety of traditional British dishes, and to compliment our menu there’s a comprehensive wine list, featuring a wide selection of over 35 world wines, many available by the glass. We also keep at least three real ales, continental lagers, and offer a wide range of artisan gins, malt whiskies and serve speciality teas and coffees.

A visit to The Saxon Arms is an experience you’ll remember, a great example of proper British pub food, fine ales and traditional hospitality.

First class, excellent food and service Excellent visit. Our first time but when we are in the area again we will definitely be visiting again. We called in with no appointment spot on opening time, and we’re very warmly welcomed by the young, very friendly manager who said yes of course he could accommodate us. We ordered our food which was excellent. I ordered the fillet steak and my partner had the gammon steak. Both meals were absolutely delicious. The service and attention was excellent, very friendly and efficient without being overbearing. I have no hesitation in recommending The Saxon Arms .

Friendly village pub with great food Returning home from a long day out we started to get hungry and looked on google maps for a pub with food on our route Convenient to driving was the Saxon inn and what unexpected luck it was finding it. We arrived bang on opening time and phoned the pub in case it would be awkward being turned away as we hadn’t booked ( with the current pandemic booking a table is almost a must And we had already been turned away by a different pub 30 minutes earlier ) We had a lovely welcome. ….. doors open come right in we were told Seated ordered and we made the first 2 orders from the Saxons new steak menu. Great choice. Lovely steaks. And great hosts If your in the area. And need food. This is the place to go

So Welcoming - Excellent! We had another excellent meal here last night. The food choice was very varied and our meals were nicely presented and absolutely delicious. Decent sized portions and reasonably priced for the superb quality. Very efficient and friendly staff and brilliant service. We have a severely disabled son with Angelman Syndrome, who cannot talk and is a wheelchair user. The staff were very welcoming and inclusive of him. We were touched that they had the table set up ready for him with plenty of room for his wheelchair and included him in the ordering and conversation. We can highly recommend The Saxon Arms and are very much looking forward to our next visit.

Excellent service, great food We had lunch at the Saxon Arms at Stratton on 23 May 2021, in the rainy season. The 3 of us had a greenhouse pod to ourselves. The welcome and service were excellent, despite staff having to come backwards and forwards through the rain. The food was interesting and well-cooked. All-in-all a very pleasant experience. We will return (this was not our first visit) and hopefully enjoy some sunshine in the pleasant garden.

Perfect Five of us visited the Saxon Arms for lunch today and it was wonderful. The cleanliness , the staff and the food was perfect . It’s a little gem in a very nice village just 5 mins out of Dorchester with parking and outside seating . One of our party is GF and this was no problem . I would highly recommend a visit . Thankyou Saxon Arms

Hidden Gem ! Went today for lunch and it was excellent! I have been here several times and each time I cannot fault it. The burger is one of the best I have had; tasty, succulent and cooked perfectly. That is a rarity these days, with them often brought to your table, being rare in the middle. The food is of excellent quality and served hot. Again, this is not often the case in some restaurants. The service is outstanding, with above and beyond communication. Being always busy when I have been there, there is no waiting around for the next course. The staff are attentive and the ability to make the customer feel important. Nothing is too much trouble. If you are over the age of 50, you can guarantee the music is soft, subtle and they understand the meaning of ‘background’ music. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough; outstanding!

Wonderful to be back We went to the Saxon arms as we were on holiday, wonderful to be back. Lovely service from the staff. The men were called Sir and the ladies Madam, such a welcome change from “Hi guys what can I get you?” Going back on holiday in July already booked for an evening meal whilst we are there

Wonderful welcome We booked this restaurant for a meal out on the first day of our holiday and we were not dissapointed. We were welcomed at the door by a member of staff and shown to a window seat. The meal was first class and service was friendly and efficient. We were very impressed and will definitely be back.

A welcome return to a favourite Just had Sunday lunch at the Saxon Arms outside in the sunshine. A warm welcome as always and attentive service The food was excellent. There were four in our party & we had 3 delicious roast Sunday lunch and I had the fish special of the day - roast halibut which was fabulous. A sticky toffee pudding, Elton mess and a cheese board to finish for 3 of us which were finished off with great aplomb. A fantastic lunch with great staff, well spaced tables at a reasonable price. And we will keep coming back. Thank you Saxon Arms.

Greenhouse Pods Have just had a wonderful (socially distanced) family get together "outside" in a greenhouse pod. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was wonderful. Even though the food had to be carried outside it was all piping hot. The Christmas turkey was gorgeous as was the chocolate brownie! Well done in these difficult times.
